In Othello, the thing to remember is that while yes, Othello is a Moor (and therefore black) he is also the greatest general of their time. He's honored and highly respected. Desdemona is a white girl, the daughter of one of the most influential citizens. He respects Othello, but doesn't really want a Moor (or in truth ANY foreigner) marrying his baby girl.
Othello has been given leadership of the army. Iago, his most trusted lieutenant, however, wants that role for himself. He knows that there is no way that he can defeat Othello or usurp him by honest means. When Othello marries Desdemona he begins to see a way to discredit Othello, thus gaining the position and power for himself, in Othello's love (and need) for Desdemona. He will use misdirection to cause Othello to be extremely jealous and lead him to his destruction by making him believe that Desdemona is cheating on him.
This is a fabulous play! In fact, there is a very well known monologue in the end that I bet you already know. Remember the scene in the movie "Interview With a Vampire" where Tom Cruise puts the wine glass over the candle before scaring the prostitute when he's trying to get Louie to kill humans? "Put out the light, then put out the light....". That's Othello.
